Spotting the Rise
A snowmelt overnight, an undulating
cloud of mayflies above clear, cool water,
another trophy rainbow netted at
the Squannacook was what I wanted for
Cousin Freddy, but he didn’t make it
home alive from Nam. So, first warm day
of spring it was only me and Uncle Francis
squinting through the early morning glare,
Francis patiently untangling my line,
whispering how God has plans and soon
we’d understand, when he stopped and pointed
skyward at an osprey circling. Look,
it’s spotting the rise for you, he said. Take
my rod and cast. And I did. I made it
my best, the hand-tied caddis landing softly
beyond the bird’s wide shadow, drifting back
slowly toward whatever lay there waiting.
