Ablaze

The world is ablaze.
Streets are not safe.
I walk and I fear what lies ahead.
Is this my time?

I run to the truck to get food for my family.
As bullets whizz by.
I see my friend, Zena, fall
And then rise and stagger away.

What will my children eat tonight?
Where will we go?

Who will speak for us when we are gone?
Who will remember us?

Stillness

Sometimes I think I will wake up
One morning and f will
Not be able to move.
My muscles will have stiffened so much
To the point that
No matter what I will possess,
I will not be able to move.
I see this in my hands
Which lock up every morning
And wait for the weight of exercise to prod them to move.
What will it be like
Not to move,
Not to dance,
To be still,
So still…
