For Roz, Turning the Syllables, Read at her Memorial Service
We turn over the syllables one by one, parsing them
As if they were coins to be counted and measured or paint colors to
comprise a scene from Paris or a local park.
In our daily work with words and numbers, we are
Trying to achieve a certain mastery of the intricate design we carve.
considering our words and deeds carefully,
involving tempo and cadence,
A measure of our words and intentions.
As with the first snowfall or with the first blossoms of spring,
We are in awe of what nature holds for us, not always
Realizing the role that numbers have in our world.
Our plants follow a prescribed plan with patterns already set in nature,
As we appreciate them anew each season.
Our words come together in a pattern echoing those of plants,
Using rhythm, rhyme, and meter to set our course
In our writing and in our reading,
And in our conversations.
Thereby creating
Meaning to ourselves and others with
Understanding and insight.
