Our Body: Our Sleep
David Hickman
"To be awake is to be alive"
–H.D. Thoreau
In her thin coalition
of chemicals
In her slip that glistens
and sighs
she is more than motion
she is less than time
Shadows are on the houses
they are falling from
the doors
wind is shaking
the long hair of the
willows saying:
we are more than motion
we are less than time
Light is on the sugar fields
that lie inside our sleep
love is not the thing we
are, though love is what we
speak;
I am more than motion
I am less than time
