HINDSIGHT COMES IN HANDY
Had I known that Jeff would die stepping off a curb in Yemen before he hit thirty, I would have let him take me to the movies. Maybe things would have been different for me and Melissa if I’d known that she’d fall into an eight ball and never be able to pull herself out. Caitlin and I went shopping for asparagus two days before she went shopping for her prom dress and ended up a bunch of wilted roses on the side of the road. Bethany wrote better yearbook articles than me while we laughed at out of focus photos of ourselves, but she never made it to graduation. When Lisa never made it home from the movies my dad didn’t want to ruin my vacation, so I found out too late for the funeral. Sandy asked me to keep her secrets from her sister, only temporarily, and I couldn’t bring myself to utter them over her open casket. Ryan got his life together just in time to stop breathing peacefully on the basement hide-away bed. Emily promised to keep in touch, but eight months later there’s no memory of what her laugh sounds like. I called Jamie to see if the rumors were true and was too ashamed to ever speak to her again. I told Jason he saved my life by taking me to Blockbuster after school when we were kids – but we’re adults now.
