Four writers walk barefoot along the beach at Cape Henlopen

They consider disrobing for a Polar Bear Plunge on this warm November day, instead walk between kite-flying families to Herring Point where surfers in wetsuits swim under the large beak-scoops of pelicans flying in formation, not unlike the migrants who crossed into California through a hole in the fence they saw in a TikTok video– backpacks brimming over not unlike the overcrowded refugee camps in Lesbos and Samos, Greek islands where I once sunbathed with a lover — it didn’t work out — the quality of sun not unlike that at Chichén Itzá, where our tour guide insulted my American pronunciation of Chichén Itzá and Christy spent way too long shopping for handwoven blankets to bring back as Christmas presents though we were in Mexico to escape Christmas capitalism, not unlike how the Mayans ascended the pyramids to be closer to their gods, and anachronistic chains installed to aid tourists in their downclimbs were removed because more than once a tourist fell and broke bones and sacrifices were made.
