not clear cut, but still . . .

a woodpecker scolds the crunching
of gravel under my feet. true. i do not
tread lightly here. stumps and woodchips
surround my home. i chose the assassins
well. their murders were surgical. only
stumps and woodchips remain. and
remorse. when will forgiveness
come? still. i wear mourning
as a hooded robe. i
am sovereign here.

Good Knight

Before you were memory longed for, you
were “The Knight (Self Portrait)” 1951.
No dot dot dots here. No loud, screaming colors.
Just strokes of hues and some cross-hatchings.
One hand is holding a shield which has captured
three arrows, as the other hand rises a weapon
above head, triumphant. Your hood is holding
the half-moon of your face, of your grin, of
your eyes – steadily – meeting my eyes, simply.
Straight. Forward… Today, there you are, seeing
into this me a decade before I would even be born.

After considering the painting by Roy Lichtenstein.
