The Moon is So High

Desmond O'Brien

The moon is so high
I will touch it
by riding on a wave of my blood
that is the child of a soaring wing.
I can do anything
with my heart. I can read it as I walk
as the shadow of my skin enfolds me
in a thousand patterns of yearnings
I will chalk out the frame of my small life
and color it with infinities
that are my very essence.

Come moon
Oh come sweet moon
and drink my proffered nectar.
It is the tears of all children
deep-eyed with light
who never weary
who ever delight
and are mowed down among the flowers.
