The Day was Fine

Tuschen

              and kelly (a five-year-old girl-
brilliant in her innocence as all
children are, of course) came
by the terrace and sat silent.
               beer and a herald tribune-
               i was silent also.
               finally—
tuschen, i saw a cemetary today-
a european cemetary!
               newspaper down
               i looked at her—
               what do you think?
               i think that god is
               playing chess—
               the markers look like pieces
               and i think that god
               is playing chess!

               well, okay, do you think
               he's winning?

               no. he'll never win.

               why?

               tuschen, you're being silly!
               you know what i mean—
his pawns are too heavy . . .
