If the Bahamas

Dieter Weslowski

are love by day and night:
a languor of wind and scent
of flowers wafting up
from naked sleepers at noon,

then why say you remember only
the jalousies trembling,
the sea mouthing the reef,
your room suddenly blind,

when it was the salt
on the mouth that frightened you.
